Climate Change: Three Basic Schools Quizzed At Talensi District

galamsey

As part of efforts to address climate change, three basic schools in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region have been quizzed on environmental conservation and disaster preparedness.

They are Awaradone Primary School, Pwalugu Primary School and Yinduri Primary School.

The quiz comes months after environmental clubs had been inaugurated in each of the three schools and their pupils prepared by experts for the show. In less than two hours of a grueling race for the ‘green crown’, the quiz produced a king. And it was Awaradone Primary School!

For a participation prize, each school took home sanitation equipment, stationery and certificates.

The initiator of the club and the quiz, the Community Development and Advocacy Centre (CODAC), and the sponsor, World Vision’s Talensi Area Development Programme, were impressed with the contestants’ depth in climate change.

CODAC’s Programme Manager, Mr. Issaku Bukari, said there was no better way and no better time to catch them young than what just happened. Plans were underway to do same in more schools where the same clubs had been formed, he said.

“Steps to conserve the environment and reduce disaster risk should begin with these little ones. Then it will spread,” said Mr. Bukari. “Our social interventions are meaningless unless they are linked up with total readiness to prepare the young ones to be better managers of the environment,” he added.

The Talensi Director of Education, Mr. Joachim Faara, enjoined the patrons of the clubs to keep members conscious that waste could be reduced, recycled and reused.

“Your schools should be signposts that direct other schools towards environmental protection,” he urged participants.

The District Chief Executive for Talensi, Mr. Edward Awunnore, entreated the children to be hygiene-conscious and rather take their studies seriously than engage in time-wasting activities. He also assured the audience of Government’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all children.

Awaradone Primary School topped with 33 points. Pwalugu Primary School finished behind with 32 points ahead of Yinduri Primary School who obtained 24 points. The Millennium Development Goal number 7 seeks to guarantee environmental sustainability by 2015 two years remaining.
