Ras Ghale |
The 2005 award winner of the reggae song of the
year Mohammed Sheriff Yamusah known in showbiz as Sheriff Ghale has waded into
controversy over the consumption of “weed” otherwise known as Indian hemp among
Rastafarians in the Rasta world.
The Tamale based reggae musician who has won several international
awards told Daily Guide that he personally sees nothing wrong in the smoking of
weed which in his view is very healthy as compared to others.
Sheriff Ghale was speaking to the paper ahead of the commemoration of the
32nd anniversary celebration of the death of Nesta
Robert "Bob" Marley.
The event in the region is
always used as a jamboree for the consumption of large volumes of weed but he
noted that it was healthier to smoke wee than cigarette.
According to him, weed is
more natural than cigarette which he indicated is mostly made of chemicals
injurious to the health of the consumer backing his stance from personal
experience.
Though he denied smoking
any of the two but said he had lived with persons who smoked and could tell the
outcome in terms of health implications maintaining cigarette had the most
disastrous effects.
The soft spoken musician
who is a teacher by profession cataloged a number of other benefits inured from
smoking weed including the substance
being used in treatment for medical condition including asthma.
He however warned that just like any other foods, too much of its
consumption could have negative consequences on the consumer and advised those
into it to tackle it with moderation and decorum.
Mr. Sheriff lashed out at those using the day
to foment trouble disclosing that the rastaman is a peace loving, law abiding
citizen and all who yearn to belong to the rasta world must be disciplined.
But many residents disagree with
the musician on the health benefits of
smoking weed stating that its dangers outweighs the benefits and government
must formulate laws to ban its use completely.
According sections of them who spoke to Daily Guide, the infamous May 11
in remembrance of Bob Marley must not be observed as it opens the flood gates
for the smoking of Indian hemp among various youth groups.
An aggrieved parent appealed to government and various civil society
organizations to wage a relentless war against the day which in the past years
has been used to showcase smoking skills of the youth by event organizers in
the region.
Nesta Robert
"Bob" Marley, was a Jamaican singer-songwriter and musician died on May 11, 1981. He was the rhythm
guitarist and lead singer for the ska, rocksteady and reggae bands the Wailers
and Bob Marley.
According to research Bob
Marley died from a malignant melanoma, a form of cancer, that was on his right
toe and could have avoided death with
amputation, but it was against his Rastafari beliefs leading to the cancer
spreading and causing his death.
