The
expectations of the over 4,000 continued students of Ghana Senior High School
(GHANASCO) and Vitting Technical Senior High School to return to the classroom
still hang in the balance, even though schools have re-opened for more than a
week now.
The
two schools were closed down and students asked to go home indefinitely for
engaging in violence during a football match last term.
Several
properties including student beds, furniture, windows and roofings were
destroyed in both schools. Five (5) students were also injured in the process
and were rushed to the hospital. But, the Ghana Education Service (GES)
considered the final year students of both schools to remain on campus for
their final examinations, but under strict conditions.
It
was a free for all fight and destruction of school properties by the rampaging
students, who reportedly overwhelmed the personnel of the Ghana Police Service
due to their large numbers.
At
the moment, all Senior High Schools in the Northern Region are in the
classrooms but students of GHANASCO and Vitting SHSs are still home, without
any assurance from the GES yet.
There
have been repetitive violent behaviours among most Senior High School students
in the region, where most students at every least provocation quickly resort to
extreme violence and deliberate destruction of school properties.
Meanwhile,
reliable information reaching Savannahnews has indicated that the
Ghana Education Service has now received the final report of the Independent
Committee set up to investigate the riot between GHANASCO and Vitting Senior
High, and was yet to study the report for the necessary actions to be taken.
However,
this blogger can confidently say that all the students in both schools can
return to their respective classrooms only when they had duly received the
necessary punishment and also paid for all the damages caused to the schools’
properties.
They
would also sign individual bonds with their parents to be of good behavior,
before they could be allowed into the classrooms.

The
Northern Regional Director of Education, Alhaji Mohammed Haroon Cambodia who
has been passionate and consistent in dealing with indiscipline among students
and teachers in the region, stated categorically in an interview with Savannahnews
last term that none of the students who were involved in the riot would escape
punishment.
He
said that, his administration would not tolerate any form of indiscipline on
the part of students or their teachers. Alhaji Cambodia recently reaffirmed his
commitment to ensuring quality education through discipline and dedication, and
that he would not allow any person or group of persons to derail his efforts.
The
GES Director observed with high suspicion that most of the students had become
much involved in the use of hard drugs such as Indian hemp, alcohol and smoking
of cigarette among others, while others had also become reprobates or
troublemakers because they secretly practice occultism and sakawa.
Late
last year 2015, three Senior High Schools in the Northern Region including
Salaga T.I. Ahmadiya, Nalerigu and Karaga SHSs were closed down for engaging in
similar misconducts and destruction of several school properties. Northern
School of Business (NOBISCO) was also closed down early this year 2016 for
misconducts.
In
the case of Karaga, Nalerigu and Salaga TI Ahmadiya SHSs, the rampaging
students attacked their headmasters and destroyed properties including, school
buses, three pickups, 91 flat screen computers, furniture and others. As a
result, the Regional GES Director had to dismiss all the students in the three
schools numbering over 3,000.
The
Northern Regional GES Boss told Savannahnews that his vision is
to passionately improve the abysmal performance of schools in the region in
both WASSCE and BECE examinations.
