VRA DONATES TO FLOOD VICTIMS IN N/R

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has allocated 20,000 Ghana Cedis as part of its humanitarian efforts to relief this year’s flood victims in the three Northern Regions of Ghana.

About 10,000 Ghana cedis of the money have been used to purchase food items for distributions to the victims in the affected communities in the regions.

The Northern Region will be the most beneficiary of the items with areas like Savelugu/Nanton, Tolon/Kumbungu, East Mamprusi, West Mamprusi, East Gonja and Central Gonja Districts.

In the Central Gonja District alone, over 32,000 people have been affected by the floods affecting schools, health centres, farmlands, food items, animals, roads, bridges and sources of drinking water.

Some human lives and other valuable properties have also been lost as a result of the disasters.

It is against backdrop that the VRA has initiated this move to complement the efforts of government, NADMO and other benevolent organizations to assist the flood victims most of whom are women and children.

Presenting some food items comprising 145 bags of maize and 65 bags of rice to the victims at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), the Director of General Services, Madam Abla Fiadjoe, said the donation of the item forms part of efforts by the VRA to lessen the plights of the victims.

The donation of food and other items to flood victims in the Northern Region started in 2007 when the Bagre Dam caused a devastating flood and worsened the plight of the people especially in the Upper East and Northern Regions.

She expressed the sympathy of the entire management and working staff of the VRA to the affected persons and called on organizations to further assist the people.

Receiving the items on behalf of the flood victims, the Northern Regional Minister, Moses Bukari Mabengba commended the Management of VRA for good gesture which he said sought to complement the efforts of government.

He assured that the items would be distributed fairly to the various communities through NADMO and cautioned the officials of NADMO not to make any attempt to divert any of the items.

The Minister also called on other organizations to come to the aid of the flood victims.
