The University for Development Studies (UDS) has for the 2010/11 academic year admitted 7, 028 fresh students’ to pursue various academic programmes both at the degree and diploma levels.
Out of this figure, 6, 202 students are pursuing degree programmes while 826 would read diploma programmes representing 49% of the university’s intake. If all the 7,028 applicants who accepted the admissions have reported, the total population of UDS as at now is about 19,800.
Professor Harunah Yakubu, Vice Chancellor of the UDS dropped this hint at the 18th Matriculation Ceremony of the University held at the Tamale City campus premises in the Northern Region of Ghana.
According to Prof Yakubu who took over the position as Vice-Chancellor last month, though the University encountered challenges with the on-line admissions, the processing of applications and data accuracy were successful, adding “all the lapses in the admission system will be addressed ahead of the 2011/12 academic year”.
He announced the Bachelor of Education, Bachelor in Integrated Management Studies, MSc in Business Finance and Micro-Credit, MSc in Leadership and Development as well as MSc/MPhil in Community Health and Development as some of the undergraduate and graduate programmes that had been introduced this year to take place at the WA campus of the University.
Prof Yakubu called to mind his vision for the UDS which would focus on providing continuing leadership in the areas already developed and to further develop the institution into a practically oriented one that will gain international recognition for its academic excellence and community development.
President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), Bilal Taimako Shamsudeen, in a welcome statement urged the fresh students to abide by the University’s standing orders.
He appealed to government, Non-Governmental and Community Based Organizations and other institutions to contribute towards the development of UDS.
Bilal Shamsudeen said the University has come of age hence the need for it to be developed into a world class academic institution that exist to enhance the human resource needs of poor Northern Ghana.
The University for Development Studies UDS was established in May 1992 by Ex-President Jerry John Rawlings in accordance with PNDC Law 279.
The University Authority was mandated to run programmes that would effectively and efficiently combine academic work with community-participatory and extension work.
The UDS has four campuses scattered all over in the three Northern Regions of Ghana comprising the main Nyankpala campus, Wa, Navrongo and the Tamale City campuses.
The University has seven faculties such including the Faculty of Agriculture and that of Renewable and Natural Resources in the Nyankpala campus, the Faculties of Applied and Mathematical Sciences in Navrongo.
The Faculties of Integrated Development Studies, Planning and Land Management, Education, Law and Business Studies are in the Wa campus.
Additionally, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Graduate School , the Centre for Continuing Education and Inter-Disciplinary Research, the French Language Centre and the ICT Centre are found in Tamale, Navrongo and Wa campuses.
