CEMENT SHORTAGE HITS NORTHERN REGION

The Northern Region has for the past two weeks been hit hard by a shortage of essential building ingredient cement.

Although the price per bag has skyrocketed from Gh¢ 13.50 to Gh¢ 15 in view of the recent fuel hikes, the commodity is simply not available.

This situation has grounded government and private developers’ ongoing projects.

Some cement dealers have started importing cement from neighbouring Togo through Yendi but this does not even get to the Tamale township upon arrival due to the high demand.

Building and road contractors have left their sites and are now wandering in search of cement to complete their projects.

Alhaji Mohammed Shukura, a leading cement dealer at Aboabo expressed worry that the shortage was gradually killing their businesses.

He said customers who made advance payments for the product are getting impatient over the situation and called on the relevant authorities to intervene to save the situation.
