TAMALE BENEFITS OVER GH¢ 2M FROM GUMPP PROJECT

The Aboabo Market in Tamale, one of the biggest and well patronized in the Northern Region of Ghana will soon undergo a major facelift under a project known as the Ghana Urban Management Pilot Programme (GUMPP).

The project when completed will make the market more attractive and conducive for commercial activities, considering the fact that many traders from all walks of life come to the market to transact all kinds of merchandising.

The projected investment cost of the Aboabo Market upgrading project which is to be funded largely by the Alliance Francaise de Developpment, a French International Development Agency is GH¢ 2,562,186.86, a figure that is unprecedented in the history of the market since its establishment in the 1950s when the population of the Metropolis was less than 100,000.

But now, with the population of the Metropolis believed to be over 300,000, the Aboabo Market which also serves as one of the trade hubs in grains, tubers and other cereals in the country is under severe pressure with limited or inadequate facilities and space to accommodate traders and their clients.

The impending upgrading project would therefore result in the construction of an array of infrastructural facilities at the Aboabo market including the provision of 100 units of stores, five (5) sheds, each with a capacity of 40 stalls, complete pavement of the market and the lorry park and the construction of drains within and along the market.

Other facilities to be provided are the construction of a 20 unit water closet place of convenience, re-wiring of the entire market and Lorry Park, installation of security lightening systems and the construction of five security gates in the market.

Selection of the project sites, situational analysis of project sites, and preliminary estimated cost of the project have all been concluded.

Alhaji Abudulai Harruna Friday, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive announced these at a meeting with the leadership and a cross section of traders and market women at the Aboabo market recently.

Present at the meeting were Alhaji Iddrisu Maadugu, Chairman of the Aboabo Market and Inusah Fuseini, Tamale Central Legislator and Deputy Minister for Energy.

Alhaji Abudulai Harruna Friday said the Metropolitan Assembly would continue to attract the necessary support from her development partners to undertake critical and meaningful development in the Metropolis and appealed for the support and co-operation of all in the city to enable the Assembly to achieve its objectives.

Three other cities namely; Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi and Ho are also going to benefit from similar projects with the provision of a variety of infrastructure.

The Ghana Urban Management Pilot Programme according to Tamale Mayor is an urban project designed to enhance the living conditions of the people in all the beneficiary cities and is geared towards deepening the decentralization process in Ghana and eventually contributes to enrich the national urban policy.

He said aside the Aboabo Market, the Tishigu and Moshie Zongo communities which are all slums in the heart of the Tamale Metropolis shall be given possible facelifts with the provision of basic social amenities. The main Tamale abattoir and new toilet facilities in the Metropolis are also being considered for rehabilitation and construction under the programme.
