97 Year Group of Ghanasco Hands Over Refurbished Library

Alhaji Alhassan Suhuyini
The 1997 year group of Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) has handed over a refurbished library facility to the management and students of the school at a brief ceremony.

Built in 1960, the refurbishment of the library cost GH₵42,000.00 and this comprised of fixing new tiles, ceiling, roofing, fans, furniture and other auxiliary facilities.

Spokesperson to the group and legislator for the Tamale North Constituency, Alhaji Alhassan Suhuyini, said it became necessary to provide support to their alma mater after a team visited the school to assess their needs.

According to him, there were many needs on the table after the team’s assessment but they chose the 57 year old library because of its significance to the academic performance of students.

Alhaji Suhuyini appealed to the media to join efforts to encourage old students of various year groups of SHSs to donate towards the development of their alma mater.

He however hinted that it was in the plans of the 1997 year group of Ghanasco to further upgrade the library by adding ICT facilities by the end of 2018.

Headmistress of Ghanasco, Hajia Amina Musah, commended the group for the support they and other year groups have given to the school since she took over as head.

She enumerated various forms of support the school has received including the donation of 3 huge poly tanks from the Ashanti Region branch of Old Ghana SHS Association (OGA) and ongoing refurbishment of the headmistress office and staff common room by the 1998 year group.

“I am beginning to feel the presence of OGA in the school. Old students are beginning to show interest in the school…The only time I saw a little facelift for this library in particular was when Alhaji T.A. Mahama was here as headmaster. Today I am witnessing a completely new library refurbished by the 1997 year group”, she remarked.

Ghanasco will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2020 but sadly, it has no assembly, well equipped ICT laboratory, incinerators and toilet facilities for the about 2,500 student population.

The lack of conducive toilet facilities, according to Hajia Amina, is compelling the female students in particular to defaecate in the open close to their hostel.

The headmistress appealed to the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to expedite action in working on the poorly constructed toilet facility it provided the school so that the students can stop the open defaecation.
