Time For Young Ones To Take Charge – PPP Candidate For Nandom Constituency

The Progressive Peoples’ Party (PPP) aspirant for the Nandom Constituency, Kabriku Peter Claver, has urged the youth of Nandom to consider him among his other two competitors for the seat and vote for him to represent them in parliament.

According to him, voting for him would send a clear signal to the older generation that young people from the area were more capable of holding key leadership positions and that it was now their turn to take charge of the affairs of Nandom.

Speaking to Savannahnews in Tamale, Mr. Kabriku said despite the fact that Nandom was endowed with a lot of learned people in various career fields, the area still lagged behind in terms of economic development.

He blamed the previous and current legislators for their failure to lobby their governments to initiate developmental projects to turn around the hopes and aspirations of the people, hence the persistence and deepening poverty levels among the populace.

“Nandom is not just fit for only NDC and NPP politicians who have over the years reneged on their responsibilities towards constituents. It is about time Nandom people also consider an alternative choice like the PPP and vote for me and my presidential candidate Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom to bring real economic improvement to their communities”, he said.

He cited falling standards of education, poor road networks, lack of support for constituents to venture into small scale business and among others as the teething problems facing the area.

“Nandom is not connected to any district by a tarred road. All the roads are unmotorable. I have also realized that most of the schools have just two or three trained teachers while the rest are untrained. In 2015, the district performed poorly at the BECE exams. The situation has been like this under NDC and NPP legislators”, he pointed out.

With his campaign motto: “Peace, Education and United Development”, he promised to revive education, health and agriculture which were very critical to the over 80 thousand people of Nandom.
“I’ll establish a scholarship fund to deal with the challenges in the education sector. A lot of the young people completing basic and senior high school and unable to continue due to monetary problems would be supported through this fund. Support for teacher trainees who would be willing to serve the district for at least 3 years coupled with the organization of vacation classes for students is also a top priority for me.

“I believe that teachers and students need to be motivated to give off their best…..and so I’ll motivate all best performing teachers and students as a way of raising the quality of education higher like it used to be many years ago”, Mr. Kabriku stressed.

He noted that Nandom still had a lot of potential for agriculture and promised that crop farming boosted with irrigation schemes and animal husbandry was one of the policies he would deliberately roll out with his share of the MPs Common Fund to support constituents who were ready to venture into such areas.

The 33-year old nurse tutor of the Tamale Nurses and Midwifery Training College is currently competing with former legislator of then Lawra-Nandom Constituency Mr. Ambrose Dery of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service Dr. Richard Kuuire of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The current legislator is Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor from the NDC who has decided not to contest again after many years of representing the people. Like Mr. Kabriku, Dr. Kuuire is also a new face in the political arena and many are wondering which of the two would give Mr. Ambrose Dery, an experienced politician, a run for his money.

Mr. Kabriku is an alumnus of Nandom Secondary School and University of Cape Coast (UCC). He is by far the youngest parliamentary candidate among the two other contenders for the Nandom seat. He comes across to many people including his constituents, former schoolmates and working colleagues as a cool and calm personality who is also hardworking and result-oriented.

He had his basic education at Kogle Junior High School before proceeding to Nandom Secondary School and Bolgatanga Nurses Training College where he obtained a Diploma in Registered General Nursing in 2006. He worked in Bawku and Saboba Districts as a staff nurse before pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Health Science Education (first class) at UCC. Currently, he is again pursuing a Masters Degree programme in Education in the same university.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kabriku Peter Claver is current National PRO of Nurse Educators Group, Ghana; former Chairman of the Audit Committee for Health Science Education Students Association (HESESA) 2012/2013; and former Voluntary Tutor at Tanoso Community Nursing Training School.
