Mr. David Wuni |
THE District Chief Executive (DCE)
for West Mamprusi in the Northern Region, Mr. David Wuni has called for strong
cooperation and support of all stakeholders especially the chiefs and
people to enable him deliver development to them.
According to the DCE, the
development of the communities in the district could be realized only when all
the key stakeholders complement his efforts and that of the government towards
the implementation of the Better Ghana Agenda, aimed at bringing the needed socio-economic
and infrastructural development to the people.
Speaking in an exclusive interview
with Savannahnews, the West Mamprusi DCE appealed to the
traditional authorities, religious bodies, security agencies, civil society
organizations, the youth groups and other stakeholders to maintain the
prevailing peace and security in the district for an accelerated socio-economic
development.
The West Mamprusi District which is
one of the largest districts in the Northern Region and strategically located
on the Tamale-Bolgatanga highway, according to Mr. Wuni had the goodwill and
the potential to become one of the leading commercial centres in the northern
sector of Ghana.
He therefore insisted on the chiefs
and people to remain peaceful in order to attract more investors or businesses
to the area to address the youth unemployment.
The new DCE unveiled his plans to
prioritize the promotion of education, healthcare delivery, agriculture, youth
and women empowerment, rural electrification, road network and water and
sanitation. Mr. David Wuni who described education as the main pivot for
socio-economic upliftment in every society, complained about the poor
performance of the various schools in the Basic Education Certificate
Examination.
The Professionally trained teacher
said that the government on its part had provided the necessary infrastructure
for effective teaching and learning but the lack of commitment on the part of
most of the teachers, parents and students continued to impede the quality of
education in the district.
It is believed that most of the
teachers absent themselves from school and the few who are regular leave the
classrooms before closing time. Mr. Wuni therefore called on the Circuit
Supervisors and the Parent Teachers Associations to assist his administration
and the District Education Directorate to monitor the activities of the
teachers.

He said that he would not tolerate
any misdemeanor or indiscipline from any of the teachers, since they owed it a
duty to develop the children into useful citizens. He also encouraged parents
to show keen interest in the education of their wards, especially the girl
child and stop giving them out for marriage and as maidservants.
The DCE also announced his readiness
to make agriculture one of the most attractive business ventures for the people
especially the youth to reduce the rate of youth unemployment in the district.
The government through the District Assembly he noted was supporting the
farmers in diverse ways to ensure high productivity.
He noted that the government was
also constructing more of the feeder roads in the farming communities to
facilitate the movement of goods to the urban centers and also open up the
areas for efficient economic activities. Mr. Wuni said that the assembly was also
working with the District Security Committee (DISEC) to deal holistically with
the Fulani herdsmen to avoid destruction of farm lands and other farm produce.
“We are also monitoring them
seriously to ensure that they do not burn the bushes and people’s farms in this
dry season. Most of our farmers store their farm produce on their farms and any
attempt to burn the bushes can lead to serious devastation which will also
result in food insecurity in the district”.
The DCE assured that the government
of President John Dramani Mahama was set to build more storage facilities to
prevent post-harvest loses by farmers in the District. According to him,
the government was conscious of the poor rainfall pattern in the area and was
therefore planning to build more irrigation dams to enable the farmers go into
all year round farming.
Mr. Wuni therefore reiterated his
call for peace and unity among the people. Saying, “Let us desist from acts
that would derail the development process of the assembly and come together as
one family devoid of political affiliations to transform the West Mamprusi
District especially in areas of education, health, sanitation and agriculture”.
He also appealed to investors to
take advantage of the peaceful nature and the strategic location of the West
Mamprusi District and relocate to the area, where chiefs were ready to allocate
lands to them free of charge for their investments.
