About
27 year old Fulani man has been murdered by some unidentified angry
youth of Lamashegu, a suburb of Tamale for allegedly stealing a
motorbike. The victim is alleged to belong to one of the motorbike
snatching syndicates operating within the Tamale Metropolis for some
time now.
At the time Savannahnews
got to the scene, the lifeless body of the suspected motorbike snatcher
had been dumped on one of the pavements around the Lamashegu main
Roundabout, attracting serious traffic jam due to the large number of
people that had surrounded the place.Lifeless body of suspected robber |
Even
though he was covered with some green leaves, our cameras could still
capture the various injuries and blood stains around his body. It was
gathered that the deceased and his gang of three had over the last few
months robbed several people especially ladies of their mobile phones
and motorbikes, sometimes at gun point.
But
luck eluded him, when he allegedly fell from the motorbike he had
stolen together with two others following a heavy chase by the youth of
the community.
The angry youth allegedly tied him with a rope around the waist after beating him, and dragged him on the tarred road.
One of the eyewitnesses, Kofi Adam who spoke to Savannahnews justified why it was necessary for the youth to take the law into their own hands and visited the suspect with instant justice.
According to him, the Fulani people had been making life somehow unbearable for the community people especially in the nights.
“When
you arrest them and give them to the police even with evidence they
still tell you we are doing our investigations which sometimes take over
two or more years. Because of the attitude of the police, the Fulanis
feel they are untouchable. So this is the only way the youth can advise
ourselves,” Kofi Adam said.
But two other eyewitnesses, Mr. Charles Ayendago and one Ibin Iddrisu completely condemned the act of instant justice.
According
to Mr. Ayendago, even though the Police lackadaisical approach to some
issue of this kind obviously angered the youth to act funny, it was
still necessary to the youth to respect the laws of the land since the
deceased was just a mere suspect.
Mr.
Ayendago also a media practitioner lamented that he personally made
several calls on the police to come and intervene or save the life of
the suspected motor snatcher, but it took them over four hours to get to
the scene.
At
the time the Police officials led by the Tamale Metropolitan Police
Commander, DSP Caesar Abanga arrived at the place, there was a serious
traffic as incoming and outgoing vehicles could not freely move through
the thick crowd.
However, DSP Abanga who personally carried the dead body into a Police Pick up in an interview with Savannahnews denied receiving so many calls from the public.
According
to him, it took him less than 20 minutes to arrive at the scene after
receiving the first call from an unknown person.
DSP
Abanga described as totally wrong for the youth to take the law into
their own hands and assured the public of swift police investigations
into the matter.
