TAMALE CHIEF EXPRESSES DISGUST OVER INCREASE CRIME

His Royal Highness, the Chief of Tamale Traditional Area, Naa Dakpemah Mohammed Alhassan Dawuni, has expressed disgust over the seeming recent upsurge in crimes involving some gangs in the Tamale Metropolis in recent times.

The city according to the Chief is now under attack by all manners of criminal activities including ranging from motorbikes snatching, armed robbery, harlotry and among other violent crimes targeted at foreigners who arrive in the city late in the night.

In his attempt to forestall these social vices once and for all, Naa Dakpema on Monday January 17, 2011 called on the Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Roy Amuni and his Deputy ACP Mathew Kojo Appiagyei at a meeting in his Palace to widely beef up security in the metropolis by ensuring that those social miscreants are brought to book.

The Chief of Tamale said he could never rule his community peacefully when such bad characters were around causing mayhem and also trying to tarnish the image and gains of Tamale. He gave the police tip-offs to areas around the Tamale Sports Stadium and the Aboabo Forest Reserve where he hinted were the hideouts of such criminals.

Naa Dakpemah also revealed that the activities of the gangs had even extended to traders and other travelers who patronize the Metro Mass Transit (MTT) Buses at dawn around 3:00 to 4:00 am.

According to him, some of the victims mostly women had been robbed with their luggage, mobile phones, laptops and other valuables around the Aboabo Market through to the bus terminal.

The revered traditional ruler explained that even though Tamale had in the past experienced serious violence that have Chieftaincy and Political undertones, the issues of robbery and stealing were alien to him.

The Tamale Chief also called for strong collaboration between the Regional Security Council, the Metropolitan Security Committee and the Police to ensure that tourists, traders and other visitors to the city were free of any trouble.

The Secretary and the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Dakpema, Iddrisu Abdul-Rashid and Abass Salifu respectively told the media that, with immediate effect, the police would begin patrolling those spots and possibly comb the entire Aboabo Forest Reserve to fish out those criminals from their hideouts, since they constitute a serious threat to the people of the Tamale.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Roy Amuni commended the Tamale Chief for releasing such vital information to the Police and gave the assurance that there would be swift intervention.

However, the Deputy Commander ACP Mathew Kojo Appiagyei was very disappointed about the rate at which some youth of the area were attacking the Police for performing their duties of arresting motorists with unregistered motorbikes and riding without crash helmets.

ACP Appiagyei also appealed to the Chief of Tamale Naa Dakpema Mohammed Alhassan Dawuni to counsel his colleague chiefs and other opinion leaders in the Metropolis to stop interfering in the operations of the security agencies by forcibly demanding the release of arrested traffic offenders and other crime suspects.
