The new recruits will undergo a 21 day or three week orientation training under the supervision of the Ghana Education Service (GES) following which they would be posted to communities in the Tamale Metropolis where teachers are in high demand.
Northern Regional Coordinator of the NYEP, Mohammed Adam Amin disclosed this at the official launch of the orientation exercise at the Tamale Islamic Senior High School.
According to him, the programme formed part of steps adopted by his office in collaboration with the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to reduce the rate of youth unemployment in the metropolis.
Mr. Mohammed Amin warned the new Community Teaching Assistants against absenteeism or truancy and unequivocally stated that his office would not hesitate to take punitive actions against anyone among them who will violate the contract’s terms of reference.
He disclosed the NYEP’s plan to sponsor majority of them to pursue higher academic laurels based on their commitment to the task they had been assigned to carryout.
The NYEP Coordinator also announced one more module which he hinted will offer training to local film and drama Actors/Actresses in the Northern Region.
This, he noted would give them the opportunity to compete favourably with their colleagues in the film industry whose contribution to national development cannot be underestimated.
Moses Bukari Mabengba, the Northern Regional Minister quoted GH¢ 92,000.00 as the amount government has pumped into the programme so far.
He therefore encouraged them to accept postings to communities where their services were needed to get the masses out of illiteracy and ignorance.
Mr. Moses Mabengba impressed upon the beneficiaries to attach importance to the programme by being regular in school and handle the pupils with care.
The Mayor of Tamale, Alhaji Abdulai Harunah Friday revealed that the Assembly released additional GH¢ 142, 000.00 to make the programme achieve its intended purpose.
