GHS WARNS STUDENT NURSES AGAINST PREGNANCY

Student nurses who get pregnant during training are to face strict sanctions from the Ghana Health Service since the action thwarts their efforts at acquiring the vital and requisite skill needed for professional practice.

It is purportedly against the rules of Service for trainees to get pregnant while in training or during their orientation.

The Upper East Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, Dr. John Koku Awoonor-Williams, speaking to the subject with newsmen said the practice was unacceptable and objectionable warning that appropriate sanctions would be applied to such students.

He said the professional training of the nurse would be incomplete without the one year mandatory orientation.

Dr Awoonor-Williams said there had been requests for the release of nurses on orientation to the Greater Accra, Ashanti and the Brong-Ahafo regions and any nurse who would contravene the orientation policy shall have his or her name deleted from the payroll as having vacated post and not certified for appointment by the service.

Dr Awoonor-Williams appealed to sponsoring agencies to stop sneaking students out of the orientation period and allow them to go through the training.
