Members of National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) in the Savelugu/Nantong District of the Northern Region of Ghana as part of their service week celebration have donated food items, detergents and other valuables worth Gh¢330.00 to the Malja Al-Ansuar Orphanage in Savelugu.

Additionally, they registered about 100 needy residents of the Savelugu, Diare and Nantong communities under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) financed through their personal contributions estimated at GH¢ 580.00.

President of the Savelugu-Nanton District of NASPA, Jonathan Lartey, said the donation was intended to improve the living conditions of the beneficiaries.

“This is our contribution as service personnel to create better healthcare and improve the overall living standards of the people of Savelugu/Nantong District,” he stated.

He mentioned a joint clean up exercise and blood donation in collaboration with Zoomlion Company Limited at the Savelugu hospital, an entrepreneurship symposium and a football gala as some activities that were undertaken to mark the weeklong celebration.

Caretaker of the orphanage, Iddrisu Mohammed Awal, who doubled as Head-teacher of the Malja Al-Ansuar English and Arabic School commended the National Service Personnel for the kind gesture with a promise that the donation would be put to good use.

Speaking on the theme: “National Service in the drive for a Better Ghana Agenda” Mr. James Agana, Savelugu District Director of NASPA disclosed that the district received 430 National Service Personnel and National Volunteer Personnel deployed to the various departments in the area.

He said they were committed to their call to national duty except that accommodation has always been a major problem to service personnel who were posted to serve in the district.

Mr. Agana thus, appealed to government and other stakeholders to help resolve the accommodation challenges to enable service personnel accept postings to the area.

Alhaji Abukari Inusah, the District Coordinating Director for Savelugu/Nantong commended the service personnel for their dedicated service to the district and pledged the assembly’s commitment to make life comfortable for every worker posted to the area.

In a related development, the event was marked in Yendi with a call on residents of the area to sustain the fragile peace in the Dagbon Traditional Area.

Hamza Salifu, the Yendi Municipal NASPA Coordinator urged government and other development partners to help restore peace and tranquility in the Yendi Municipality .

He however complained that majority of service personnel posted to the Municipality have shown less commitment to their service to nation building.

Mr. Salifu gave the assurance that his outfit will ensure that incoming service personnel for 2011 would be monitored and coordinated to improve the socio-economic wellbeing of residents of the Yendi Municipality . He further appealed to workers who fled the area during the conflict to return to post.
