1.2BN CEDIS FOR SPORTS DEV’T & OTHERS IN TOLON-KUMBUNGU
Two community based organizations, the Dalun Youth Association (DYA) and Opportunity Partnership Programme (YOPP) based in the Tolon-Kumbungu District in the Northern Region of Ghana, have advanced plans to collaborate to ensure effective development and social cohesion in their area through sports.
The two organizations consisting of mainly persons in their early 20s and 30s, and coming from five communities in the district, have also decided to harness human and material resources to venture into dry season farming, HIV/AIDS campaigns, sanitation, vocational skills training among others.
In view of this good idea, the Danish Gymnastic Institute (DGI), a company in Denmark that is into sports education and development has promised to provide a grant of about 1.2 billion old cedis cash including technical support to the course of the youth for a period of two years.
Speaking at an international seminar held at Dalun in the Tolon-Kumbungu District, which brought together the DYA/YOPP members and their partners from Denmark, the Chairman of DYA, Sumaila Salifu, said the main aim of the project is to unearth hidden talents in various sports disciplines in the district and also provide a platform for the discussion of pertinent issues confronting their development.
He told savannahnews that the grant support will also come with equipment and materials that would be needed for training members of the two associations in areas such as football, volley ball, table tennis, basket ball and other local sports.
“We have identified sports as a development tool that can unite people, and have therefore decided to use it to bring all the youth of Tolon-Kumbungu together to achieve the kind of development that we as a people cherish or want for the district”, he pointed out.
Mr. Sumaila said he was confident that the two groups had made progress and very soon, sports will not only be a tool for development in their communities but also a tool for peace and harmony in the entire Northern Region of Ghana.
A representative of the delegation from Denmark , Peter Buang remarked that it is good for young people to have dreams so that they can work towards their accomplishment. Adding, that is why the Danish people found it prudent to associate themselves with the dreams of the DYA/YOPP members so that together, they could achieve those dreams.
Mr. Buang observed that coming together as young people from different background and nationality; they could share experiences in sports and culture.
The District Chief Executive for Tolon-Kumbungu, Alhaji Iddi-Manzah Mahama lauded the youth of Dalun for partnering with their pals from a foreign country like Denmark that has well developed sports facilities and talents so that they could also tap some experiences from them.
He urged them to try and build on the relationship between the two countries so that it will serve as a good example to other people to emulate.
