ZOOM KIDS CLUB FORMED IN NORTHERN REGION

The Environmental Health and Sanitation Directorate in the Northern Region, estimates that 95 percent of homes in Tamale, the regional capital lack toilet facilities. The same figure, according to the Waste and Sanitation Management Department of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly also represents the number of basic schools in the Tamale Metropolis that are without toilet facilities for pupils and their teachers to use during nature’s call.
Even though Tamale has been rated the cleanest city in Ghana and also the best assembly in terms of waste management, the situation in the homes of residents and in the schools, is a cause for concern.
Even in homes where toilet facilities exist, such facilities have been reportedly converted into bedrooms for rent due to the high accommodation problem in the city which is regarded the fastest growing city in West Africa.
In view of this daunting situation, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a leading waste management organization has decided to inaugurate sanitation clubs in five selected basic schools in the Tamale Metropolis.
National Environmental Sanitation Coordinator of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, Ms. Beatrice Amponsah, said the company wants to share and achieve its main goal of improving sanitation in the country as a whole by the formation of sanitation clubs in schools.
As the adage goes, catch them whilst they are young, the company wants the children in the schools to imbibe and grow with the culture of good sanitation, she said, adding “nothing complex, nothing weird, but the simple practices and intuition of learning to make their environment clean and pleasant”.
The sanitation clubs dubbed: “Zoom Kids Club” have been formed in five basic schools such as Tamale International School, Alhassan Gbanzaba Primary School, Evangelical Presbyterian Primary School, Rabiansis Primary School and Anwari Dua Islamic Primary School.
With these clubs, innovative activities during club time would be undertaken. Activities such as educative talk on personal hygiene, health and sanitation, sanitation related diseases by resource persons would be addressed. Aside these activities, beautification exercises in the schools, tree planting activities, excursions to some waste management organizations, drama by kids, inter school quizzes on sanitation, unannounced visits to schools to see how clean the place is, among others would also be undertaken.
The goal of this, is to bring the minds of the pupils to consciousness on sanitation and put them into practice, so that the will not litter indiscriminately, learn to was hands with soap and water frequently so as to be healthy, not urinate or defeacate anywhere and engaging in drama to educate themselves.
The Northern Regional Operations Supervisor of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, Mr. Daniel Martey for his part appealed to heads of the selected schools to take part in the programme to assist the company to make the dreams of personal and environmental cleanliness a reality. He equally urged market women, traders, drivers and the general public to be mindful of the health hazards and effects of the poor waste management practices at markets, homes and the offices.
